Flash and Actionscript Programming

Flash is a great technology for producing highly creative online content. Combined with actionscript programming, Flash allows you to have embedded video, sound, animation and user interaction that is smooth and dynamically driven. Unfortunately Adobe and Apple have yet to come to an agreement for liscencing this technology on the iPhone. As a result, I've redesigned my ownwebsite so that it doesn't use Flash. Like many actionscript programmers, I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of a flash plugin for the iPhone!

Fusion Marketing: An Online Interactive 3D Game for McQuerter, Inc.

The idea here was to demonstrate the power of integrating your marketing efforts between direct mail, print, and online media. Each ball represents a different aspect of marketing, and the goal of the game is to connect all the balls together. The red ball represents the "Online Relationship Engine" which is the component which connects all the others together. This flash piece uses extensive actionscript programming to create a truly interactive game that feels like a real 3-D enviornment.

Sharks at Risk: An online educational game.

Sharks at Risk is the title of the third episode in the inspiring PBS television series, Jean-Michel Cousteau: Ocean Adventures. This interactive educational game was developed as a companion piece for the program hosted on the KQED.org and PBS.org websites- where children who had watched the program could then log-on and learn more about how Shark generations are at risk in our oceans.

Website Animal - website building software

Website Animal is a flash-based website development application. It was sold at retail stores on a CD to encourage people to quickly and easily create their own websites. I designed the CD package, and the corresponding website, which was built in flash. This website includes embeded video clips of a spokeswoman explaining how to use the product.

Bart Dority: A Flash Preview of my Portfolio

My old website was heavily flash driven. I've included the intro piece of it here - for those of you who have the flash plugin available on your browser.

Jacques Pépin: Fast Food My Way

In Jacques Pépin: Fast Food My Way, the man who taught millions of Americans how to cook shares the techniques he honed in the most famous kitchens of the world to show you how to create simple, special meals in minutes. This flash piece was built as part of the companion website which was hosted by KQED and PBS.org. The folks at KQED wanted to create an experience, so that users could explore the set where the television show was filmed. This piece uses Flash technology, extensive Actionscript programming and includes embedded video clips of various recipes that are demonstrated in the show. Clicking on the oven launches the video where Jacques teaches us how to make a Lavash Pizza. Clicking on the hanging copper pots launches a video demonstration of how to make Peasant Soup. The scene pans to the left or right, and is designed to engage the user in an exploratory experience.

Jerry Frost - Abstract Artist

Jerry Frost is a very talented and prolific artist. His oil paintings include abstract, figurative work and landscapes. He lives in San Francisco. I developed this flash-driven slide-show style presentation of Jerry's latest work as a promotional piece to send directly to gallery reps and interested art buyers. It includes a sound track and some simple animation designed to capture and engage the viewers attention towards some of the energetic details that are so captivating in his work.

The Technesis CF Counter - product demo

Technesis had developed an entire suite of software applications that all connect to external office machines such as copiers, printers, and fax machines, using a touchscreen device. This flash piece explains how the whole system works together.

Foundry Networks - Scripted typographic animation

This piece was produced as a temporary splash page for the Foundry Networks Public Website. It was active during the Network and Interop Tradeshow. Based on a video commercial, it was translated into flash for use on the web.

A script was written which takes a string of characters and splits it up into single letterforms which then animate across the screen one by one. It also makes special calculations to appropriately adjust kerning between the letterforms. The video sequences were animated using masks.

The Strategy Gallery - theoretical navigation system

Boston Consulting Group had developed a website which had a large collection of articles written by Boston Consulting Group's Strategy Institute. The site had tons of rich content, but a navigation system that was very static and not very engaging. The navigation system didn't adequetly reflect the richness of the content. It was agreed conceptually that the site needed a navigation system that was much more dynamic and fun to interact with. This "Navigation Cloud" randomly floats the titles of all the articles in the gallery across the screen in various sizes and speeds. It also pulls these titles dynamically from an XML document on the server. The user can interact with the navigation cloud by moving the mouse around (the further to the sides, the faster it moves, and it slows down in the center) -- it also switches direction, left to right. This allows a lot of varying navigational choices to the user without making them scroll through a predictable vertical list. It also offers a better means of exposure to articles the user may not have read.
