3D animation

3D Computer Graphic Animation and Special Effects

Most of my 3D computer animation is from the late 1990's, but some of it is still being used - noteably the New Line Cinema Intro piece. These pieces were all done while I was R/ Greenberg and Associates, in New York. The work was done using SoftImage on a network of SGI machines.

New Line Cinema Films

This animation is the title sequence for all of New Line Cinema Films' productions. It was a digital recreation of the original. Built in 3D using SoftImage on a Silicon Graphics Workstation. The sequence was built with over 20 layers of animation composited with unix shell scripts. It was rendered at film quality resolution digitally and then transfered to film and video.

My responsibilities included 3D modeling, lighting, atmosphere, lighting animation, unix scripting, and project management.

The shadows are all created with real geometry, and animated along with the ladders to give the illusion of light casting a shadow through a mist. Much of the lighting animation is also created with geometry to create the illusion of the starburst and the blue glow in the distance. When Newline released "The Blade", the title sequence was appropriately re-rendered in blood red. .

Shell Gasoline - The Disco

This animation was the fourth in a series of six television commercials. The tagline for the campaign was "With Shell Gasoline, you might find your car performing in ways you didn't expect." The six spots each had a unique muscial theme. This is "The Disco".

My responsibilities included camera animation, extensive 3D modeling, texture mapping, and lighting. This piece was completely digitally created. Proprietary lighting software was written to acheive a very high degree of realism. Because these commercials were some of the first to use SoftImage's inverse kinematic animation in combination with live action data feeds, they received several awards for the use of this ground breaking animation technique.

Shell Gasoline - The Limbo

This animation was the third in a series of six television commercials. The tagline for the campaign was "With Shell Gasoline, you might find your car performing in ways you didn't expect." The six spots each had a unique muscial theme. This is "The Limbo". My responsibilities included 3d modeling, texture mapping, reflection maps, and rendering schedules.

Shell Gasoline - Chicago

This animation was the second in a series of six television commercials. The tagline for the campaign was "With Shell Gasoline, you might find your car performing in ways you didn't expect." The six spots each had a unique muscial theme. This is "Chicago". The cars and gas pumps in this piece were all created digitally, but the set design was done with a real miniature set. My responsibilities included 3d modeling, texture mapping, reflection maps, and rendering schedules.

Skytel

This animation used a combination of real photography with digital rotoscoping so that it starts out with the real product being photographed, but then when the device starts to melt, it becomes totally computer graphic generated. Handling this smooth transition was my responsibility, as was the melting effect into the shape of the map of the United States. I also built and animated the "information tube", the information on the laptop screen, and the road building out of the screen.
